Got a lot of fonts? Would you like a quick way to see them -- even the ones that aren't installed? Then take a look at FontLister, a good-looking utility that any Windows font fanatic will enjoy. It lets you print and view samples of all your typefaces (including TrueType, Type 1, and screen fonts). Switch between an Edit view that shows samples of faces one at a time, complete with user-configured text, and a Compare view that builds quick samples of all highlighted fonts so that you can see several typefaces at once. You can print three different types of samples of every font or just the ones you need hard copies of. A toolbar gives you fast access to most commands, including quickly changing the font's attributes and size. Other options let you delete and install TrueType fonts, get detailed information on each font, customize background and foreground colors, and display of all of a font's characters in ANSI table form.

FONTLISTER NOW WITH WMF EXPORT

Peter Theill's excellent font viewing, printing, installing and comparing utility, FontLister, is now up to version 3.4.9 as at 10th May. I last commented on this program last year (October and December in WOW Vols 3.43 & 3.52) and still it continues to improve. Perhaps Peter Theill has been reading the discussion in this column on saving font characters as separate vector files, for he has included just that capability in this latest FontLister update. My only problem was in finding where that function was to be found, and by digging a little (Peter's Help file hasn't yet caught up with this addition) it became clear that the WMF export function is a menu item when the font is viewed in ANSI Table format. The chosen character may be either directly saved as a stand alone WMF (Windows Meta File) or EMF (Enhanced Meta File) or it may be copied to the clipboard in either of those formats, for further use in whatever other application will accept the follow up 'paste' routine. What I hadn't noticed, and was brought to my attention by Robert F., another FontLister fan, was the fact that the WMF export capability also applies to TrueType fonts which have not yet been installed. The utility which started this discussion, Symbol Selector, only operates its WMF export capability on Fonts which have been installed, so that's an extra brownie point to Peter Theill.

Check out Peter's slick little piece of Freeware called FontSelector. This is a simple Freeware font viewer for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0. It gives you a fast and easy way to browse and print all your installed fonts. Finally I'd like to draw your attention to one of the most accommodating basis for payment you could find - I'll quote it just as it appears. Peter Theill, you are the sort of software developer who deserves recognition from us all. Peter says:- 'It's easy to register. It's only $5 and you can pay using all the major credit cards. Within the next couple of days, you will receive your personal registration key. Many registered users have told me that FontLister was worth more and that they'd gladly pay more than $5 for it. You will be able to register FontLister for $5, $10 or $15. All three prices entitle you to the same rights and benefits. If you use FontLister a lot and have the money, please register for $15. If you use FontLister a little or you're a poor college student, I'll be happy with your $5 registration. Register whichever you want, whichever amount that makes you feel the best.' I'm touched!

gave it a nice 'FontLister is $5 well spent' review.

Peter Theill from Denmark has produced a font viewing utility I have been watching for some time. It is now up to Version 3.3 and has to be one of the best $5 utilities you could buy. It allows viewing of both installed and uninstalled TrueType fonts, and the bit I really like is the way it will open an ANSI Character box which can be re-sized to "very large". Go to http://www.theill.com/fl/ for more information. I note that this utility will allow fonts to be compared (help to weed out duplicates with different names) and gives several alternatives for printed samples.

gave it the 'Get It!' rating
GetIt!

We pick a Try It rather quickly; when we run it for the first time, if we yell "Cool!" then it's a Try It. A Get It is a well-known distinction at WinFiles.com. Previously, the Getit was our only distinction, but we added the Try It in an effort to urge software developers to provide software that is easier to install. Not being able to figure out how to install a program is the number one complaint among our visitors. Therefore, a Getit has the exact same criteria as a Try It, but it must also have at least Install Support. You usually won't be disappointed with one of these!

gave it nice review

Honorable software developers just impress the hell out of me. It's more rare than you might think. Here's a excellent program to help you manage those fonts that are in your system and I mean excellent, but not only is it only $5, but it never expires. The developer relies on the honor system, just like those nice guys at Winamp. You are expected to register the software after 30 days, but he doesn't nag you about it, or leave your computer in a tizy because it expired. Downloading too many fonts that you don't need WILL crap up your system, slow it down and eat up your RAM. This program will give you a nice list, and allows you to install and uninstall fonts. If you have lots of fonts, get this and save yourself a headache.
